Wedding RSVP etiquette in the age of WhatsApp

RSVP etiquette has changed. Paper cards are nostalgic but slow. WhatsApp groups are fast but messy. Here's how to ask, when to chase, and what to do when half your guests ghost.

When to send

Save the date: 6 months before the wedding. 8-12 months if it's a destination wedding.

Formal invitation with RSVP link: 8 weeks before. Includes the venue, schedule, dress code, RSVP deadline.

RSVP deadline: 4 weeks before the wedding. Anything later and your caterer will charge you the late-confirmation premium.

How to ask

Send the invitation link via the channel each guest actually uses. For most weddings in 2026:

• WhatsApp / iMessage for close family and friends (most guests)
• Email for older family members who don't WhatsApp
• Printed card for grandparents who are not online

The link should unfurl into a beautiful preview card in WhatsApp / iMessage — your guests should see the wedding before they tap.

How to chase

2 weeks before the deadline: send a soft reminder to all pending RSVPs. Frame it as "we're finalizing numbers for the caterer".

1 week after the deadline: send a personal WhatsApp to anyone still pending. People feel bad RSVPing late but worse if they don't reply at all.

Day-of-deadline +3 days: assume non-responders are non-attending. Lock the caterer's count.

Edge cases

Plus-ones: be explicit. "We've reserved a spot for you and Ahmed" beats "feel free to bring a plus-one if you want." Vague invitations create awkwardness.

Dietary restrictions: ask once on the RSVP form. Don't ask three times — guests will get annoyed.

Kids: be explicit. "Adults only, please" or "Kids welcome — we'll have a children's table". Don't make parents guess.
