How to choose a wedding invitation theme

You don't need to be a designer. You need to answer five questions.

1. Where's the wedding?

The venue is half the theme. Beach? Coastal blues, Destination Beach theme. Vineyard? Garden formal, Floral Romantic with cream. Rooftop in Brooklyn? Modern Editorial, dark luxe. Riad in Marrakech? Floral Romantic with deep blush and gold.

If you can't picture the wedding, the theme won't help you. Pick the venue first.

2. What's your aesthetic on Instagram?

Open your saved Pinterest board. Look at the first ten pins. What do they have in common? Pale and serif? Classic Serif. Dark and editorial? Modern Editorial. Boho with browns and creams? Boho Chic. Trust your saves.

3. What's your dress?

If your dress is ivory lace, your theme should not be high-contrast modern. If your dress is structured satin, Floral Romantic will fight it. The theme should serve the dress, not compete with it.

4. Will your guests get it?

Some themes read as "wedding" to anyone (Classic Serif, Floral Romantic). Others read as "design-forward couple who care about how things look" (Modern Editorial, Dark Luxe). Pick the level of design literacy your family has.
